borrowed another self-helper. this one is interesting. the open focus brain by les fehmi phd. whole lot of pages and chapters, but what i enjoyed most about it is techniques to decrease stress and instanteously reach a state of relaxation. sounds impossible right. crazy thing is it actually works. i'll tell u how to do it in a second. but, when you reach this state of total relaxation, it's supposed to increase synchronous alpha waves. a mind condition maintained by professional meditators. cool huh? so there's many exercises included in this book to reach this state, but i'll only mention the lines that actually helped me. fuck, the section that helped me is actually kinda long.. oh well, here it goes..
"as you continue to read this page, allow yourself to be aware of the three-dimensional physical space between your eyes and the words printed on the page. let the awareness occur gradually as you continue reading. because we are conditioned to sense only objects and exclude space, it may take some time for you to become aware of this visual sensation of physical space. once you become aware of the space, pause for a few seconds as you gently maintain that awareness."
"now, without shifting your eyes from the page, gradually begin to sense the space that is to the right and to the left of the page."
i hope you sorta get the picture from these 2 excerpts. there's alot more to it. but this exercise allowed me to experience awareness in a new way. it's very relaxing, calming and decrease the mind chatter instantaneously.
some guiding questions that helped me as well...
"can you imagine the distance or space between your eyes?"
"can you imagine the space between your ears?"
"can you imagine the space between your eyes"
dude, so i was trying these questions out and started experimenting on my own. i tried. "imagine the space 5 feet behind my head." "imagine the space 5 feet left of my head." 5ft right of my head, 1 meter above my head... like this.
i think it really helped me to explore how to use my mind in a different way.
so, when you imagine nothingness or space and increase your awareness of it, you are instantaneously entering a state of mind that is calm and clear. when i try the above exercises, i immediately enter a state in which thoughts do not exist. this is pretty exciting for me because since my freshman year in college i've been practicing ways to silence my mind so that i could experience some form of enlightenment. but, trust me, this is a bigtime short cut. it's fast and doable. i like it.
the other day after reading this book and trying these exercises. i was playing that nintendo ds game, tetris attack. i was able to play the game like i never did before. i noticed my attention was very narrow in past in comparison, but, now i see the tetris pieces on the screen and am able to feel out ALL the pieces and put them to use. it's like my awareness is much more relaxed to the point where i can absorb more. it's really cool. kinda weird, but at one point, my body disappeared and just my stylus pen was touching the ds screen. lol i think i had an out of body experience or something.
i just noticed the book comes w/ a dvd full of more exercises. i'm gonna try that out tomorrow.
oh yea, i borrowed this book at santa monica public library.
